Hobbies sound a little 19th century. During that time, women had to either slave all day or lay about all day. Those that “laid about” had hobbies. Piano, needlepoint, singing, blah blah blah. I could go into a feminist rant, but I’ll try to stick to the subject. These days we are so busy that if one were to chose a hobby one¬†would have to love-love-love it to be willing to make room in your life for it.

Arts and crafts are where it’s at. I know it sounds weird, but I love to craft and there are a plethora of crazy cool crafts to be done at your kitchen table. And they are not too expensive or space-consuming. I recently started getting Somerset Studio Magazine and I find that I want to do everything in the damn mag! This past issue had an article on Suzi Blu and her Les Petit Academy. It is an online “academy” for crafts. I am going to take one of her classes and see what I can learn. It looks cool and she is an amusing person to watch.

Also, North Carolina has quite a few options for those of you who want to delve even deeper into your craft. I have a friend who recently received a scholarship to Penland for textiles and said that she learned a ton of new techniques. The John C. Campbell Folk School has always intrigued me. They have tons of classes. I know next to nothing about the Sawtooth School for Visual Art, but the classes look interesting and they have one day classes for adults and kids. That is neat.

If you are looking for a way to express yourself and do not consider yourself “an artist” you should look into the 1000s of crafts that are available. And, who knows, maybe you could make some extra cash on Etsy!
